The impact of orthographic forms on speech production and perception: An artificial vowel-learning study

This study investigates the effect of orthographic forms on phonetic aspects isolated speech sound production and perception. Three groups 25 L1-Spanish speakers were exposed to /y/ /?/ in a multi-session learning study. They heard same vowels presented with: L1-incongruent forms, novel or without forms. After three exposure sessions, participants tested vowel an elicited task perception multiple forced choice task. All established new categories. Incongruent led less target-like category positions for but not Novel only facilitated more /y/. In fourth session, Auditory-only incongruent orthography /?/. Sequential caused positions, while sequential altered neither. Together these results suggest that affect sounds are encoded at level. grapheme-to-phoneme mappings from L1 later-learned languages may critically characteristics non-native sounds, outcomes depend specific L1-L2 contrasts.
